Why Doesn't My Model Import Correctly?

One of the most difficult things across 3d animation and modeling software is getting the model exactly right. There are too many factors to name in this little article but suffice it to say, it’s something that’s happened for a long time and will continue to just be a thorn in our side.

So what do we do about it?

There’s a couple of issues.

Scaling

My model is HUGE when I bring it into Filmatick. That’s mostly because each modeling/animation software uses different increments. Some use meters and others use inches. Sometimes we get lucky and they both line up but most times they don’t.

The easiest thing to do is scale it once it’s in Filmatick. You can do this by clicking on the object in the 3d view and then changing it’s scale values in the Properties Panel.

Textures

Importing files such as .fbx and .3ds usually have texture information on them and aren’t a big deal but other types of imports (.obj in particular) may be imported without any color or texture information at all. The best way to fix that is to go back to the original software and save it out either as a .fbx file or something else that’s compatible in that software.

There may also be issues with the glossiness or shininess of the object when bringing it into Filmatick. The best way to deal with that is play with different settings in the original software to get the results you need.
